Aussie Decals has released a new sheet, available in 1/32, 1/48 nd
1/72 scales, covering one of the most unusually marked F/A-18A Hornets
in the early service of the Royal Australian Air Force. Tonight we are
reviewing the 1/48 scale version.
3 Sqn RAAF already had some interesting markings with the six stars
of the Southern Cross painted in the fins (a tradition stretching back
to Second World War Mustangs and Kittyhawks in Italy), plus a chevron
overlaying a tapered streak along each side of the fuselage spine.
Wing
Commander B.J.S. Mouatt added his own personalised touch too - a
distinctive Cobra's head to the nose of the aircraft. This Cobra went
through three distinct versions. The first, dating from November 1986,
was relatively simple, painted in grey. The second version from
August 1987 was redesigned as slightly smaller but with more prominent
grey gums and a fine black outline to the mouth. Later the same year,
the gums were transformed into a ferocious red.
All three versions are supplied on the sheet.
The decal sheet also includes the serials, individual aircraft
numbers, general 3 Sqn markings and the Roo roundels, but you'll have to
source the stencils from elsewhere.
The decals are perfectly printed on very thin-looking carrier film.
Instructions are supplied on a single sided, black and white sheet.
Each of the three versions is illustrated.
Aussie Decals' Cobra Head Hornet decals should look great on your
Hasegawa or Revell 1/48 scale, or Academy 1/32 scale, early F/A-18A
models.
