By most accounts, Trumpeter's 1/32 scale F4U-1D Corsair is a good kit overall. It is certainly streets ahead of the ancient Revell F4U.

It is therefore pleasing to see that Cutting Edge Decals has releases two sheets for the new kit.

The subjects covered on the two sheets are as follows:

CED32037 F4U-1A Corsairs Part 1:

  • F4U-1A Lucybelle, #86, Greg Boyington, VMF-214, November 1943;

  • F4U-1A, Martha, #883, Bob McClurg & Greg Boyington, VMF-214, December 1943;

  • F4U-1A, #740, Greg Boyington, VMF-214, December 1943.

  • Bonus markings for F4U-1A, #915, Greg Boyington, VMF-214, January 1944, which was lost on Boyington's last mission;

All the above aircraft are finished in the mid-war three-tone blue scheme. Three of the subjects wear the red border to the national markings. A single set of this style of insignia is supplied, along with prop decals and some stencils. National insignia with the later blue border for the bonus option will have to be sourced from elsewhere.

There is a rogue aircraft that appears on the cover, F4U-1A #827, which does not appear on the instructions or as markings on the decal sheet. Perhaps we will be seeing this subject in a future release!

CED32038 F4U-1A/D Corsairs Part 2:

  • FG-1, SeaBees/USMC insignia on nose, #993, VMF-222, Philippine Islands, March 1945

  • F4U-1A, Ace of Diamonds insignia on nose, #643, VMF-122

  • FG-1D HQSS-22 Skipper's Orchid;

  • F4U-1A VFM-217 Ring-Dang-Doo

There are some interesting personal markings amongst this lot. Three aircraft are overall Gloss Sea Blue, and one in three-tone camouflage.

A full set of national insignia plus some stencilling is also supplied.

All the markings are in perfect register, colours look great and decal film is at a minimum.

Please note that some minor modifications will be required to the Trumpeter F4U-1D for accurate depiction of the F4U-1A subjects.

These new decals will be warmly welcomed by fans of 1/32 scale models in general and WWII US Naval aviation in particular.

Recommended.
