The Cutting Edge Modelworks CED48024/72026
provides complete markings for the SU-27 Flanker of the 83d IAP,
Ukrainian Air Force that attended the International Air Tattoo (IAT)
at RAF Fairford in July 1996.
Two SU-27s were in attendance at the IAT number 57, which was flown by
Colonel Nikolai Koval in a several demonstration flights, and its more
colourful sister, number 48 which was on static display. It is the
latter aircraft that Cutting Edge has chosen to depict for this decal
sheet.

The decals are contained on two sheets and
consist of the bright blue and yellow stripes that cover the wings and
spine of the fuselage as well as either side of the nose and the
rudders. Thankfully, the decals that cover the spine and wings are
provided as three different designs to ease placement. Curiously, the
nose stripes incorporate the stencil style “48” as well as the other
designs as a single decal. A complete set of national markings are
also provided as are the bands for the tops of the vertical
stabilizers and the stencil style “48”s for the vertical stabilizers.
Stencil data is limited to red and yellow striped intake warnings.
Decal placement is guided by an A-4 sized full colour instruction
sheet and colour notes are provided on a separate sheet. The colour
notes provide matches to the Russian paint scheme with commonly
available model paints as well as the particular colour differences
worn by this aircraft– a real bonus as far as I’m concerned! The sheet
looks as if it has been printed by Microscale. The individual decals
are all sharply printed and in perfect register. The decals and
instruction sheets are all packed in the ubiquitous clear plastic
zip-loc bag as is the norm for the vast majority of decal manufactures
today.
This sheet is available in both 1/48 and 1/72 scale. The instruction
sheet recommends the Academy/ Minicraft Su-27 in 1/48 scale and the
Hasegawa Su-27 in 1/72 scale.
If you want something different and very bright to add to your model
cabinet then look no further than this sheet. The blue and yellow
stripes combined with the blue and grey splinter scheme worn by
Flankers will certainly stand out!
