Cutting Edge Decals has reprinted one of their
most popular and sought-after early sheets depicting 13 Swiss
Messerschmitt Bf 109s.
The thirteen aircraft comprise two Bf 109D-1s
finished in RLM 71 upper surfaces and RLM 65 lowers, nine Bf
109E-3s, some wearing the "export" scheme of soft-edged RLM 70 and
71 Greens, and two Bf 109G-6s. These two Gustavs are arguably the
most colourful of all the options. One is finished in an
experimental scheme of RLM 71 Green and medium brown upper surfaces,
while the second subject is in standard mid-war colours of RLM
74/75/76 but with huge red and white stripes on the wings and the
fuselage plus an all-white nose. One of the Bf 109D-1s shares this
striking scheme following repainting in 1944. These unmistakable
"neutrality stripes" were added after two Swiss Bf 109s were shot
down by USAAF P-51 Mustangs on 5 September, 1944.
All aircraft feature prominent placement of the
white Helvetica cross on a red field on wings and rudder, with most
wearing a fuselage cross too.
Many aircraft are also decorated with colourful
squadron insignia on the engine cowl. These include a shark mouth,
Eidelweiss, a witch riding a broomstick and a fish in a ring!
This set comes with full-colour, double-sided
letter sized placement instructions and an accompanying monochrome
sheet with additional notes covering the unique structural features of
Swiss Bf 109s, detailed stencil placement guide, a bibliography; plus paint suggestions for Xtracolor, Floquil, Polly Scale,
and ProModeler.
The decals are perfectly printed, thin, in
register and with a minimum of carrier film.
This new release will be appreciated by anyone
who wants that different "look" for their Classic Airframes Bf 109D,
Tamiya or Hasegawa Bf 109E-3, or Bf 109G-6
