Data Decals is a new company that released a set of decals for Trumpeter's 1/32 scale MiG-3.

The choice of subject is very sound. By many accounts it would seem that the new MiG-3 kit is the best of Trumpeter's large scale WWII releases to date.

The MiG-3 sported some attractive colour schemes and markings, and Data Decals has captured a good cross-section for late-version variants.

Specific subjects are:

  • "Black 12" - overall winter white except for the possibility of a bare metal nose.

  • "Smert nemetskim okkupantam!" ("Death to the German occupants!") - Green and Black or possibly Green and Dark Green with a white slogan

  • "Red 02" - a winter white aircraft with red or green outer wing panels and a black spinner - a very good look! Note that this aircraft was not fitted with leading edge slats, so these parts will have to be glued in place and the panel lines filled.

  • "White 54" - an interesting disruptive scheme of Green and Light Brown with a demarcation line of a darker shade

  • "Za rodinu" ("For Homeland") -  my particular favourite, in Green and Black upper surfaces with a giant slogan on the port fuselage side and an overpainted star on the tail.

Instructions comprise a double-sided A4 colour diagram sheet and a second A4 page with a text description of each aircraft, modelling tips and a list of references. The colour illustrations include very helpful plan and profile views..

The decals are well printed and in perfect register. This is especially important for the option with a narrow white outline to the red stars.

Data Decals' premiere production offers some very colourful and interesting options for Trumpeter's big MiG-3. I will look forward to seeing what else they have in the pipeline!
