Sky Models Decals release their latest sheet of Thunderbolt markings just in
time for Tamiya's new 1/48 scale P-47 "Razorback" kit.
Although not specifically designed for the Tamiya kits, the sheet does offer
seven interesting options for the Razorback variant in additon to five for
bubbletop "D"s and a single P-47N. All the Razorbacks are finished in Olive Drab
and Neutral Gray and all (except one) have white ID markings. What distinguishes
each aircraft is the nose and/or fuselage art. All the remaining aircraft are in
natural metal with plenty of colour splashed around noses and tails. Several
options include invasion stripes, and all feature nose art too.
Three
of the nose art options are supplied as dot-screen prints on a small separate
sheet. This permits the depiction of half-tones. Reproduction is pretty good,
although the dot screen is noticeable under strong magnification.
National markings are supplied for two aircraft. However, the style of stars
and bars with the red outline, required for two of the marking options, are not
supplied. This is a bit of a nuisance as they are not supplied in the Tamiya kit
either. Looks like a trip to the spares box will be required! Also, only a
single size of wing markings are supplied. Check you references carefully to
make sure that the early, large markings were not applied to your choice of
subject.
Stencils are provided for a single aircraft.
The decals are beautifully printed by Cartograf with almost no excess carrier
film. As I have stated in other reviews of Sky Model Decals, the printing is
almost luxurious.
Sky Models Decals' 1/48 scale P-47 Thunderbolt sheet is great timing for the
brand new Tamiya Razorback, but has plenty of colourful potential for five
bubbletop "D"s and even one P-47N.
In common with the other sheets in this series, with markings for 13
aircraft, it is also outstanding value!
Recommended.
