Red Pegasus Decals is based in the U.S. city of
Columbus, Ohio and specialises in producing decals for air racing
aircraft in both 1/72 and 1/48 scale.
Red Pegasus Decals RPD48005 supplies markings for Jackie Cochran's
racing aircraft "Beguine", a North American P-51C. The decals are
also available in 1/72 scale as RPD72005.
This one is not for the faint of heart as it requires extensive
modification to the donor kit. If you are modelling in 1/48 scale,
you will need to add the dorsal fin if you are using any other kit
than the (out of production) P-51C kit as well as removing the
radiator intake and housing from under the fuselage. The wings need
to be clipped by a half an inch too and the propeller modified. Once
these alterations have been made, you will need to scratch build the
wing (radiator) pods too. A visit to the Red Pegasus Decals website
at:
http://www.redpegasusdecals.com/ reveals that they did produce
1/48 scale wing pods at one stage but they are listed as no longer
available. There are other modifications required but these depend
on at what point in history you are modelling the machine.
Unlike the kit modifications, the paint job is a simple overall
"dark emerald green". Given this finish, the bright yellow markings
and polished metal spinner and propeller, you will certainly have a
distinctive model!
The decals themselves are silk screen printed. They are thin and
have a moderate amount of carrier film around each subject.
The decals are accompanied by an A-4 sized sheet that shows two
photographs of the one-to-one-scale Beguine, one in black and white
and the other in colour. Curiously, the colour one gives the
illusion that the machine was painted in dark blue with gold
markings which was not the case. The placement guide also advises on
minor detail differences to markings and paint finish during
different periods of the machine's life.
The placement guide and the decal sheet come packed in a clear
plastic zip-loc bag.
A little more modelling effort will be required if you opt for this
machine but the results will be worth the effort.
